Green Woodpecker - Picus viridis
This is the largest of our resident Woodpeckers, at a length of 12 inches and is a frequent garden nester, making its nest hole in the trunk of a suitable tree.
It produces one brood, laying between five and seven eggs, from April to May. The young which are incubated by both parents, hatch in about nineteen days, and are free flying in a further twenty one.
Often seen feeding on ants on lawns.
